Breast Implants

The surgical procedure in which breast implants are implanted is known as Breast Augmentation. This procedure is becoming more refined with fewer complications with the passage of time. Breast implant surgery is often used in combination with breast lifting to provide effective results. These procedures are used not only for cosmetic purposes but also for reconstruction if the whole breast or part of it has been lost due to disease (breast cancer) or accident.

Some materials such as Polyurethane coated implants and others are also used for filling of breast implant but Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any of them.

Breast Implants Structure
Complete overview of breast implants shows that every implant has three basic parts:

Outer most part often called as shell or lumen or elastomer. Shell is mostly made of solid silicone-rubber material no matter what is the filling inside it.
The filling of breast implant, which is inside the shell and may be silicone gel or saline solution filling.
And the patch that covers the hole from which filling is inserted inside the shell.

Saline Breast Implants

These are Saline solution filled breast implants. Saline is simply salt dissolved in water used during surgery for internal purposes. Saline breast Implants are divided into three main types depending upon the time of saline filling into implant or presence of volume adjustment valve.
These are:
Saline implants that are filled at the factory with fixed volume of saline and no adjustments can be made.
These breast implants are filled with saline during surgery to a fixed level and later no alterations in filling can be made.
These implants are also filled with saline during surgery but even after surgery through a valve in breast implants saline can be added or removed according to requirement.

Saline filled breast implant is mostly commonly used as in case of leakage body can easily absorb saline.

Silicone Breast Implants

These breast implants are filled with silicone gel that is clear, sticky and jelly like material. Silicone is polymer of silicon with oxygen. But silicone gel is composed of silicone oil, cured large silicone and other components. Silicone breast implants are usually divided into four types depending upon the adjustment of volume and lumen (shell) layers.
These are:

Silicone breast implants of this type look like semi solid gel giving no shell appearance.
Made of single shell and filled with specific volume of silicone gel that can’t be adjusted.
Made of double shells (lumens). The inner shell is filled at factory with fixed volume and outer shell is filled during surgery to a fixed volume that can’t be altered after surgery.
Also made of double shells. The outer shell is filled at factory with fixed volume and inner shell is filled during surgery. Due to presence of valve the volume of silicone filled in inner shell can be altered even after surgery.

How large breast implants should be? The surgeon would choose the implant depending upon your breast anatomy, body type and your desired increase in size or shape. Both silicon and saline implants are very popular and approved by FDA of United States. U.S FDA banned silicone breast implants in 1992 and augmentation surgery was limited only to saline implants. But in November 2006 after 14 years again FDA approved silicone gel filled breast implants for breast augmentation for 22 year or older people and with Saline implants for 18year old women. There is no age restriction if implants are being used for reconstruction purposes. Transgender men with breast implants can be found but no statistics or data show any information about men with breast implants.
